The long-awaited secondary school intervention of EIA was kicked off on 29 July 2009 through an orientation workshop at Spectra Convention Centre, Dhaka. The one-day orientation workshop was organized with 29 teachers from 15 UCEP schools from around Dhaka city. The objectives of the very first secondary school intervention workshop were:

Introducing  the English in Action (EIA) Project to the teachers
Explaining  different and continuous teacher support activities and materials under EIA
Discussing  teachers’ roles and responsibilities as a participating teacher in the overall EIA Project, and
Demonstrating and practicing how to use the teacher support materials.

In the workshop the teachers were given an overall idea about EIA as a project and its activities. They were also made familiar with EIA Teacher Guide and other audio-visual secondary teaching learning materials. Each teacher was provided with an mp3 player uploaded with materials required for the secondary teachers’ professional development. The teachers were extremely excited to receive the iPods as well as they were very much enthusiastic to learn from the materials and implement the new techniques and materials in their classrooms.  A two hour session was dedicated for the practice of one module from the Teachers’ Guide using mp3 player and EIA Teacher Development Coordinators (TDCs) were playing the key role in the process by walking through the entire module together with the teachers. In order to provide continuous support to the teachers cluster meetings will be organized.

The workshop ended with a happy note and the teachers left with a commitment to bring qualitative changes in their classroom pedagogy.
