The 8th International Language and Development Conference took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh from June 23 – 25, 2009. The 8th International Language and Development Conference which follows a series of similar Conferences around the globe took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh and was coordinated by the British Council from June 23 - 25 2009. This was a joint collaboration between the Government of Bangladesh and DFID, through the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Institute of Education and Research, Dhaka University. The conference had a strong focus on providing a forum for disseminating important development issues related to language policy, language learning and language teaching. In particular this conference gave the platform to look at language from various perspectives by policy makers, language educators, development professionals and donors. In 14 parallel sessions 73 presentations were made covering a wide range of topics. A number of British Council presentations were made on critical language related issues as well as project presentations. There were academic papers as well as practitioners giving their views on a wide variety of topics. Countries represented in this Conference included UK, Canada, USA, countries from South Asia, and of course a large representation from the academicians of Bangladesh Apart from the other projects English in Action ( EIA ) was well represented in six parallel sessions. Each session foucssed on the separate components of the project by its various project partners respectively. One such presentation was entitled, “The Opportunities and Challenges of Introducing Large Scale English language programmes: How do we account for the realities of countries delivering such programmes?” EIA’s international partner Open University, UK made four presentations about the project components as did another partner the BBC World Service Trust. The Conference had almost 200 delegates participating from overseas and from Bangladesh. The three days of the Conference included a cultural night where Bangladeshi dancers excited the audience with local song and dance.
