OPR Visit - November 2009

The first Output to Purpose Review (OPR) of the EIA Project will take place during the week starting 15 November 2009. …
A two-member team will carry out an independent review of the first one and half year of EIA implementation. The specific objectives of this assignment will be to:

  • Assess and score the project progress against the original outputs and purpose set out in the logical framework;
  • assess the effectiveness of the EIA project management;
  • provide lessons learnt so far;
suggest ways in which the programme might be further improved.
 
Sharing on Baselines - March 2009

A sharing meeting on English in Action (EIA) baseline surveys was  held on 19 March 2009 at a local restaurant.   .
A sharing meeting on English in Action (EIA) baseline surveys was held on March 19, 2009 at a local restaurant. Presentations were made on the following three baselines:

  • English Proficiency by Trinity assessors, UK
  • Sociolinguistic Factors by Uniconsult, Bangladesh
  • Understanding the Technological Environment by Uniconsult, Bangladesh

The sharing meeting started with an overview of EIA by Marc van der Stouwe, Team Leader, EIA. Then three presentations were made by EIA’s Teacher Development Coordinators, Uniconsult -Bangladesh and Trinity-UK. The closing remarks were made by Barbara Payne, Senior Education Advisor, DFID. The programme ended with a brief remark from Tofazzal Hossain Miah, Deputy Director, Project Management Unit, Directorate of Primary Education, Government of Bangladesh. A short video on Baseline 1 was also screened in the meeting.

 
Baseline Study 3: Teachers' Pedagogical Practices

A two-week survey on Baseline 3 is being conducted by Teacher Development Coordinators (TDCs) with guidance by the Open University, UK in seven EIA project working areas. This study aims at understanding the existing methods in which English language is taught in Bangladeshi schools with close observation of the classroom environment, through the observation of actual teaching and learning in classrooms. The study looks at English teaching and learning by students in both primary and secondary schools. More than 200 classroom observations will be conducted during the period of two weeks ending February 12th 2009.
 
EIA Retreat Held - December 2008

A three-day retreat of English in Action (EIA) project was held from 14 to 16 December 2008 in Hotel Lakeshore, Dhaka. EIA plan of action for the next year has been strategized through this retreat. The first day’s sessions of the retreat included presentations from EIA partners, discussion on EIA present status and the project’s vision, mission and underlying philosophies and approaches.

On the second day of the retreat, two presentations and discussions on primary interventions for EIA and BBC adult learning were held respectively. A discussion on EIA communication strategy was also held this day.

The agenda for third day’s retreat was Project Steering Committee meeting. Facilitated by John Shotton, Director, EIA, the participants of the retreat were DFID, EIA base technical teams, Open University, UK, BBC WST, and EIA’s Bangladeshi partners: UCEP and FIVDB.

 
Baseline Studies - December 2008

Six baseline studies are being conducted to assess the overall environment of English language teaching and learning in Bangladesh. The studies are (i) Assessment of English competency levels among students and teachers conducted by Trinity College, UK (ongoing); (ii) Social Linguistic Factors concerning English language learning conducted by Uniconsult Ltd., Bangladesh; (iii) Pedagogy and classroom practices  by the Open University, UK (ongoing); (iv) Audit of Materials  by Brigid Smith, international consultant (ongoing); (v) Audit of Teacher Training by Dr. Gillian Tasker, international consultant (ongoing); (vi) The Technology Environment by Uniconsult, Bangladesh (ongoing).
